Royal Mail is honouring 30 years of Payroll Giving with a special postmark.

Royal Mail is honouring 30 years of Payroll Giving with a special postmark. The postmark – which says ‘Royal Mail proudly supports 30 years of Payroll Giving’ – will appear on millions of items of UK stamped mail nationwide. It will land on doorsteps between Monday 10 and Saturday 15 July 2017.

Launched in 1987, Payroll Giving allows employees to give to charity straight from their wages or pension without paying tax on it. Over the last three decades, the scheme has raised over £2 billion for good causes. Last year payroll givers donated more than £130 million.

Lily Heinemann, Head of Corporate Responsibility & Community Investment at Royal Mail, said: “We are really pleased to be marking the 30th anniversary of Payroll Giving with a postmark.
Our employees are incredibly supportive of Payroll Giving, raising over £58 million over the last three decades. Last year alone saw more than 20 per cent of our employees give through the scheme contributing more than £2.4 million for good causes.
We hope that the postmark continues to raise awareness and encourages other employers to offer this scheme to their own employees.”

“The combination of Payroll Giving in Action promotions and regular internal communications have taken us from 2.5% of employees giving to over 10% and at the same time quadrupling annual donations to charity to over £140K a year. It’s a wonderful achievement when you consider how the regular, dependable income generated through Payroll Giving  allows charities, large and small, to budget and plan the delivery of their essential services.”

Payroll Giving is a great way for people to regularly support causes they care about. It’s an easy and secure way to donate to charities and offers the most tax effective service so that an individual’s gift can be as valuable as possible. It’s also a great way to get employers and businesses involved in supporting charities and can engage and inspire whole workforces. It’s encouraging to see new programmes like the Payroll Giving Portal being developed and we hope that this new service will make it easier to set up schemes, as well as raise awareness of Payroll Giving and promote and celebrate those employers which are committed to Payroll Giving and supporting the charity sector.”  Ceri Edwards – Director of Policy & Communications, Institute of Fundraising.

It is therefore with enormous pride that Arriva London are delighted to announce that over the past five years, their staff, through the Payroll Giving scheme, have given over a million pounds to their chosen charities; in fact, the latest total is £1.2 million.

Over the past few years Arriva London have increased the promotion of the scheme and awareness to staff regarding how easy it is to give through Payroll Giving.  They in turn have embraced it wholeheartedly with many of them telling their stories, and the reasons for their generosity.  Members of the team like Steve, Sharon, Helen, Peter, Jayantilal and Olakunle – all Arriva employees, all Payroll Givings, all from different backgrounds and beliefs – coming together in celebration of their commitment to help others.

As Helen says in praise of Payroll Giving: “I think Payroll Giving is a wonderful idea. My two charities are the Dogs Trust and Cancer Research. Both charities are very close to my heart and to our family. I’m very proud to be one of Arriva London’s Payroll Givers.”

And Steve reflects on his reasons for getting involved: “I have a family member who’s a prostate cancer survivor.  Payroll Giving gives us the opportunity to give back to charities that really need our help.”

Peter Batty, Arriva London’s Commercial Director:
“We are incredibly proud of this achievement by our very generous colleagues.  Over a million pounds is a life changing sum and it is something we look forward to repeating in the future.  We will continue to encourage our staff to get involved.”

“We are delighted that so many of our wonderful staff take part in Payroll Giving. Since the scheme started here at Checkatrade, over £41,000 has been raised for a variety of worthy causes which is an amazing amount. It’s so easy to sign up too and even a small regular amount really does add up and make a huge difference! We talk about the scheme regularly but we also dedicate one day a year to specifically promoting payroll giving and having lots of fun too. We’ve had a tea party, staged our own Wimbledon and even a sports day with all staff taking part. We look forward to doing even more in 2017.”  – Clare Allen-Selsey from Checkatrade
